S.Africa's rand firm vs dollar, bonds sold as a hedge
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The rand gained for the sixth straight day to a three-week high against the dollar on Monday as optimism about a solution to the European debt crisis boosted risky assets. The winding down of the year was also supportive of rand gains.
Government bonds ignored the positive sentiment as some traders caught long on Friday covered those positions early on Monday, pushing yields to their day's peak, with the market trading sideways for the rest of the session after that.
Dealers were also reportedly hedging positions in the interest rate swap market by selling bonds.
The rand gained one percent on the dollar to 7.9640, from a 8.0450 New York close on Friday.
It has steadily retraced from the year's low of 8.61 and the 7.86 level forms the next barrier to further gains. The local unit bounced twice from 7.86 in mid-November.
Rand bulls look to be on the cards as the year comes to an end. In the past two years the rand has posted its strongest levels in the last quarter partly because of a decreased number of importers in the market towards the end of the year. This might help to offset the risk-averse trading linked to the uncertainty in global markets that has hit emerging markets recently.
Yields on government bonds, which move inversely to the price, added 4.5 basis points to 6.665 percent on the four-year issue and 3.5 basis points to 8.36 percent on the 15-year bond.
"There was a bit of paying in the swap market towards the end of trade on Friday and there looked to be a little bit of hedging taking place in the spot market this morning (selling bonds)," said Richard Farber, a bond trader at WWC Securities.
Liquidity was thin on Monday with investors waiting it out until a clear picture emerges out of Europe.
"You can see it with the trading volumes, I did one or two trades today, it's not like high volumes or big ticket trades," said another bond trader based in Johannesburg, indicating volumes were unlikely to have reached the 20 billion rand average daily turnover on Monday.
