S.Africa's rand hits 3-wk low vs dollar, stocks lower
By Xola Potelwa and Gugulakhe Lourie
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The South African rand fell more than 1.0 percent to a three week low against the dollar on Monday, weighed down by uncertainties about the next interest rate move and waning global risk appetite.
Stocks closed marginally lower as most sectors languished in the red on profit-taking ahead of euro zone bond auctions.
The rand is continuing its retreat from near 3-1/2 year highs of 6.55 hit last week. Some analysts say uncertainty about next week's interest rate decision is also putting pressure on the local currency.
The South African Reserve Bank is due to hold its first monetary policy meeting of the year on January 18, having reduced the repo rate by 650 basis points to 5.5 percent between December 2008 and November last year.
The rand was however unmoved by December vehicles sales which were up 29.6 percent year on year.
By 1535 GMT, the rand was trading at 6.8457 to the dollar, 0.59 percent weaker than Friday's close of 6.8055. It traded at a session low of 6.8840 against the dollar, levels last seen three weeks ago, before recovering slightly ahead of the New York opening.
"We started around the 6.81 level this morning and gradually weakened (to the) 6.88 level mainly on the back of the euro trading below $1.29," a local currency trader said.
Euro zone problems have weakened risk appetite, another dealer said.
On the bourse, the JSE Top-40 index of blue chips finished down 0.69 percent to 28,220.69, while the broader All-share index closed 0.72 percent lower to 31,698.49.
"Investors are taking profit ahead of a critical week of bonds auction in the euro zone. I suppose the market is a bit jittery still and nervous about what the outcome of that will be," said Martin Lentsoane, a trader at NEWS Trading.
Shares of cement producer PPC, the worst performer amongst blue chips, ended down 5.34 percent to 33.13 rand as its shares trade ex-dividend, or without the right to a dividend.
Investors also sold recent gainers such as furniture manufacturer and retailer Steinhoff, which shed 3.01 percent to 24.46 rand and consumer goods firm Tiger Brands was down 2.12 percent to 193.80 rand.
Government bonds weakened to end the session with the yield on the 2015 issue at 7.34 percent from 7.24 on Friday. The 2026 note ended at 8.32 percent from 8.225 percent previously.
