What is "the Market"?
  1. A market is a medium that allows buyers and sellers of a specific good or service to interact in order to facilitate an exchange. This type of market may either be a physical marketplace where people come together to exchange goods and services in person, as in a bazaar or shopping center, or a virtual market wherein buyers and sellers do not interact, as in an online market.

What is a contract for difference (CFD)?

A contract for differences (CFD) is an arrangement made in a futures contract whereby differences in settlement are made through cash payments, rather than by the delivery of physical goods or securities. This is generally an easier method of settlement, because both losses and gains are paid in cash. CFDs provide investors with the all the benefits and risks of owning a security without actually owning it.

Where can I find the 'Customer Zone'?

You can locate the customer zone by:

I am new to CFDs how do I get started?

Learn as much as you can about CFDs from our tutorial and other sources. Open a demo account and familiarise yourself with the platform and the working of CFDs. Call us with any questions or to arrange to come in for further training. Once you are happy you can go ahead and click on the open live account option.

What is the process to open a live account?
  1. Click the link on the Open Live Account link to open a live account with IG.
  2. Fill in your details and the application form will be provided to you.
  3. Complete the application form and attach the required FICA documentation and fax or scan-and-email it back to us. We will check the details and open your account within 1 business day. (You do however need to send us originals within 2 weeks.)
How soon can I start trading?

Usually within 2 days after you have supplied all the required documents and proof of funds transfer.

What is a CFD?

A contract for difference (CFD) is an agreement to exchange the difference in value of a particular instrument between the time the contact is opened and the time it is closed. Coupled with that gearing is offered to allow clients to get much more exposure to the market movement and fees are much lower than traditional equity trading.

What is a deposit?

The funds required to initiate and maintain an open position. It is not the total amount that can be lost on the trade.

What is margin?

The amount required from a client - in addition to any deposit due - to cover losses when a price moves adversely. Sometimes called 'variation margin'.

What is a margin call?

When an account is failing to meet margin requirements. This could require more funds to be deposited into the account or for the margin required in the account to be reduced by closing positions.

When do I need to deposit funds?

As soon as we receive your application and have checked it, we will supply you with the correct details for you to make an electronic transfer of funds. Please note that we cannot accept cash deposits or payments from any other sources. The proof of payment must come from an account in your name. You will also be called upon to deposit additional funds for any margin calls that may occur.

How can I withdraw funds?

You can at any time send us a request to withdraw funds from your account. We will verify the amount that is available to withdraw and call you to confirm. Funds will then be transferred back into the account details we have on file for you within 2 working days.

What does the trading system look like?

The web based trading system runs in your web browser, but uses very modern technologies to ensure a quick and user-friendly interface that delivers real-time prices as well.

Do I need to download any software?

No software is needed. The system uses very modern web browser technology to provide you with an extremely high-quality trading system in your standard web browser. This is very quick and easy to use from anywhere!

How quickly do orders go through?

We place the orders directly into the underlying market within a second of you placing them. How quickly they then get filled will depend on the activity in the underling market.

Can I trade from my cell phone?

Software will be made available shortly to allow cell phone trading.

Can I apply from outside of South Africa?

Yes, you can.

What instruments can I trade?

You can presently trade approximately 140 of the most active shares on the JSE and our SATOP40 Index CFD.

Why can't I trade forex or overseas markets?

The South African Reserve bank does not allow South Africans to transact in forex or any overseas markets without taking money offshore via your foreign currency allowance. We will be facilitating this in the near future.

Why can't I trade any shares?

We have selected shares that have a high liquidity in order to reduce the risk to clients and to ourselves. As a result, we only offer shares that have sufficient liquidity in the market that enables one to enter and exit the share timeously. Currently there are +-140 shares that meet the criteria.

What are the risks with trading CFDs?

CFDs are a leveraged product and can result in losses that exceed your initial deposit. Trading CFDs may not be suitable for everyone, so please ensure that you fully understand the risks involved. All dealings are on an execution only basis. SharenetCFDs does not give advice and any statement made by SharenetCFDs to a client shall not constitute advice or a recommendation to trade or close a trade in any way.

Do I receive voting rights when purchasing a CFD?

No.

Do I receive dividends when purchasing a CFD?

Yes. The dividends will be paid to you the Monday after the LDT date.

What happens to dividends if I go short?

You will have to pay the dividend amount in.

What happens with other corporate actions?

The CFD will try to mirror exactly what happens to the underlying instrument.

Do CFDs expire?

No, a CFD is not a Future or Single Stock Future (SSF) and has no expiry date. You can hold it until such time as you wish to close your position.

What is the minimum deposit required to open an account:

R5000 is the minimum, but we would advise clients to trade with at least R15 000.

Is interest paid on funds deposited?

Yes, interest is paid on the full cash value of the account, including any profits/losses. The rate is calculated using SABOR less 2%.

What are the tax implications of trading CFDs?

You will have to seek advice from your tax advisor as each circumstance is different, however in general as one tends to trade CFDs a lot SARS would see you as a trader and tax you on the profits and not the capital gains.

Courses

How does the course work?

All the essential information you need is packed into 25 modules which we will courier to your door. This easy to understand course is designed for your own personal use at home. The modules can be completed in about two hours each. You have eighteen months before you need to write the five online exams, which allows plenty of time.

Will this course qualify me to be a stock broker?

No, the JSE has separate requirements for this.

What support is available?

Studying via correspondence can be challenging. If at any time you do need help, do not hesitate to contact us during office hours by phone or e-mail.

Are there any tests or exams?

Each module concludes with a self-assessment to help you consolidate what you have learnt and test yourself. The final exams are completed online, once you advise us that you are ready. These exams are all multiple choice, but some questions will require you to have a pen and paper ready to do calculations. Your results are provided immediately after completing each exam. If you pass all five exams, we'll send you a certificate. If you are not successful, you will be provided with an opportunity to re-write. The exams must be completed within 18 months of registering.

What recognition will I receive?

We will issue you with a certificate when you complete your course.

What do I need to do the course? What prerequisites are there?

As a minimum, you will need the time and motivation to do the course. It is helpful to have access to a computer connected to the internet to take advantage of the information that we provide via our website.

What are the conditions of your refund policy?

We offer a no-quibble 14 day refund. This means that if you are not happy with the course for any reason, you simply notify us and return all the material to us in its original condition. We will refund you in full, provided we receive the material within 14 days.

Do you offer a guarantee?

Yes! If you're not completely satisfied with your course, simply return it within 14 days for a full, no-questions-asked refund. There's no risk to you at all!

What payment options are available?

We accept payment by credit card, electronic funds transfer (EFT), direct deposit or cheque. For credit card payments you have the option to place the purchase on budget.

Does CycleTrends include Market Data?

The CycleTrends charting application does not include any market data. An additional subscription to End-of-Day or Live (on-demand/real-time) market data is required depending on the edition purchased.

Which Market Data is Compatible with CycleTrends?

CycleTrends Daily supports locally stored End-of-Day databases in the ASCII (DN) format provided by Sharenet or in the legacy MetaStock format available from Sharenet and other data providers worldwide. CycleTrends Live supports on-demand or real-time Intra-Day data provided by Sharenet or eSignal. CycleTrends Pro supports both the End-of-Day and Intra-Day data formats.

How many computers can I install CycleTrends on?

You are allowed up to 2 installations. For example, you can install CycleTrends onto your home PC and your work PC (or your laptop)
