Positive results from initial mineral chemistry at the Riverton Kimberlite
Project in South Africa
Tawana is pleased to announce positive results from initial mineral chemistry at
the Riverton kimberlite project, in South Africa, which indicate a high
likelihood of the kimberlite containing diamonds. A dense media separation
plant is now being moved to site to start a bulk sampling program in Q3 2007.
Located 25 kilometers north of Kimberley, this project is a joint venture with
Taormina Mining (Pty) Limited ("Taormina"), an unlisted South African company.
The 4 hectare kimberlite pipe, known as the Riverton Mine, is anecdotally
reported to have produced good quality diamonds when it was mined by small scale
diggers during the 1990`s. Tawana will apply modern exploration and mining
techniques to evaluate the potential of this project.
As part of this evaluation Tawana collected kimberlite rock samples from three
sections of the Riverton Mine to determine the mineral chemistry of the rocks.
This enabled the Company to form a preliminary view on the likelihood of these
sections of the mine to produce diamonds.
The samples were processed at the Company`s Melbourne laboratory and the
constituent kimberlitic spinels and garnets were analysed by electron
microprobe. The spinels contain exceptionally high levels of chromium oxide and
low levels of titanium oxide. This indicates that the kimberlite is highly
likely to contain diamonds and supports the anecdotal reports of diamond
recoveries from the Riverton Mine. The presence of G10 (high chrome, low
calcium) garnets in the samples gives further support to this interpretation.
Tawana is currently re-locating its 10 tonne per hour dense media separation
(DMS) plant to Riverton in preparation for a 2,000 tonne bulk sampling program
scheduled to commence during Q3 2007.
