NUM MEMBERS STRIKE AT HARMONY'S KALGOLD OPERATIONS
Johannesburg, 8 May 2002 - Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited today
announced that 170 employees who are members of the National Union of
Mineworkers (NUM) embarked on an illegal unprotected strike earlier this
morning. During a march at the operations, a memorandum was handed to mine
The striking employees have been locked out of the premises and the company
is in the process of applying for an interdict to ensure that the
requirements of the Labour Relations Act are adhered to. Until such time the
striking workers will not be allowed to return to their place of work.
Harmony is currently in dispute with the NUM on annual wage increases. The
gap between the 5,5% offered and the requested 12% by the Union is more
significant as cash components demanded would see the cost of labour at
these operations increase by approximately 50%.
Employees at the company's Kalgold operations are not covered by the bi-
annual Chamber of Mines wage negotiations.
Commenting on the strike Bernard Swanepoel, chief executive said: "Mine
management is currently in consultation with representatives of the Kalgold
NUM branch. Negotiations are always the best solutions to disputes but
should the strike continue, the impact on Kalgold's production will be
minimal as mining operations are continuing."
