TRADING STATEMENT                                                               
For the 12 months to end June 2007 the Shoprite Group increased total turnover  
by 16,2% to about R38,9 billion. During this period internal food inflation rose
to 6,0% compared to less than 3,0% during the corresponding 12 months.          
The Shoprite brand, the group`s core business, grew turnover 14,2% despite      
substantial sales losses incurred during the extended industrial action in the  
first half of the financial  year. Turnover in existing stores rose by 8,1%.    
The Checkers brand, less affected by this action, showed turnover growth of     
15,0% and growth in existing stores of 10,1%.                                   
Both major chains reported a satisfactory increase in both basket size and the  
number of customer transactions.                                                
Usave, growing strongly off a relatively low base, achieved turnover growth of  
35,2% while increasing sales in existing stores 21,0%.                          
The Furniture Division continued to operate for most of the reporting period in 
a near deflationary environment, especially in respect of appliances and home   
entertainment. It nevertheless achieved turnover growth of 14,1%.               
The Group`s non-RSA operations continued its robust growth of the first half and
ended the year with turnover 29,1% higher. The strongest contributions came from
Zambia, Mozambique and Angola, while Nigeria has also started to make a         
meaningful contribution.                                                        
The above financial information has not been reviewed or reported on by the     
Shoprite Holdings auditors. The results for the 12 months to June 2007 are      
expected to be published on 29 August 2007.
