Trading Statement                                                               
In terms of the Listings Requirements of the JSE Securities Exchange South      
Africa, companies are required to publish a trading statement as soon as they   
become reasonably certain that the financial results for the period to be       
reported on next will be more than 20% different from that of the previous      
corresponding period.                                                           
Lewis advises that both its earnings and headline earnings per share for the for
the year ended 31 March 2005 are expected to be between 38% and 46% higher than 
those reported for the previous corresponding period"s earnings and headline    
earnings per share of R 2.87 and R 2.88 respectively.                           
Earnings have benefited from strong volume growth in both furniture and         
electrical sectors, a further improvement in the quality of the debtors book and
a reduction in finance costs as a result of the restructuring of the Lewis      
balance sheet.                                                                  
The Lewis Group will announce its year end results on Monday 16 May 2005.       
The above information has not been reviewed or reported on by the Company"s     
auditors.
