27 March 2003 Aspen Pharmacare to distribute 40 GlaxoSmithKline products Leading local pharmaceutical manufacturer Aspen Pharmacare has entered into an arrangement to distribute and manage 40 products belonging to GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). Under the contract, which becomes effective 31st March 2003, Aspen will have the responsibility for marketing, sales, pricing, distribution and customer support of these brands for the private sector in South Africa. Manufacturing and the intellectual property rights will remain with GSK. Among the products involved is the former Glaxo `star", ZANTAC. Other products are AMOXIL, ELTROXIN, FLIXONASE, IMIGRAN, SEPTRAN, WELLVONE and ZOVIRAX. (See full list on attached page.) The contract will run for 12 years. Commenting on the deal, Michael Spector, General Manager: Pharmaceuticals, GlaxoSmithKline South Africa, said: "The brands involved are important products that have been in the GSK stable for some time but which, in competing internally for marketing resources, are just not receiving the attention they deserve. Because of its highly respected position in the local pharmaceutical market and the availability of its resources that can be dedicated to these products, Aspen Pharmacare was the logical choice. "This move allows GSK to put its full weight behind its key products in our core therapeutic areas. It also makes good sense in terms of the current and changing healthcare environment in South Africa." Stephen Saad, Group CEO of Aspen Pharmacare, said: "We are delighted to be partnering with GlaxoSmithKline on this deal. It affords Aspen the opportunity to broaden our already strong pharmaceutical profile and to further increase our presence in the ethicals sector of the market." GlaxoSmithKline - one of the world"s leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies - is committed to improving the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer.
