TRADING UPDATE

Truworths International Limited ("Truworths") is pleased to announce that the   
group increased retail sales in the 18 weeks to 3 November 2002 by 26.9% over   
the corresponding period in 2001.  The increase is especially noteworthy given  
the strong trading base established over past years. In the comparable period in
2001, sales grew by more than 17%.                                              
The retail industry has been relatively buoyant over the past few months and    
reasonable sales growth is anticipated in November and December, albeit at a    
lower rate than has been achieved so far this year.                             
The continued strengthening of the Rand should hopefully lead to lower inflation
in 2003 and much needed relief for consumers as interest rates are lowered as a 
consequence.                                                                    
Truworths is adopting a positive approach to sales over the next few months,    
tempered by an appropriate degree of caution as a consequence of a modest growth
in the South African economy and volatility in world markets.                   
A further trading update will be released in early January 2003.  Truworths`    
interim results for the 26-week period to 29 December will be announced on 17   
February 2003
