DEREK "BUDDY" HAWTON TO BE APPOINTED AS NEW NON-EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD 
The directors of Woolworths Holdings Limited are pleased to announce that Mr    
Derek "Buddy" Hawton has accepted their invitation to join them as non-executive
Chairman of the board.  Mr Hawton will be appointed with effect from 22 November
2002.                                                                           
Mr Hawton is presently executive Chairman of Kersaf Investments Limited and     
serves on the boards of other leading South African companies.                  
The directors of the board welcome Mr Hawton as non-executive Chairman and look 
forward to benefiting from his vast business experience and the challenges he   
will bring to them.
