ANGLOGOLD APPOINTS NEW CHAIRMAN

CEO and current chairman of AngloGold, Bobby Godsell, announced the

appointment of a new chairman - Russell Edey - at the company's annual
general meeting today.  James Motlatsi will assume the position of deputy
chairman.  The appointments take effect on 1 May 2002.

Mr Edey, who has been deputy chairman since December 2000, is based in
London where he is deputy chairman of N M Rothschild Corporate Finance,
consultant to the Rothschild Group and a member of the Group's strategy
committee.  He is also a director of other listed companies in the United
Kingdom.  Mr Edey has been a non-executive director of AngloGold since its
formation in 1998 and chairs the Board's investment and remuneration sub-
committees.

Also a member of the AngloGold Board since its inception, Mr Motlatsi is
chairman of the Board's employment equity sub-committee and CEO of TEBA
Limited.  He was president of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) from
1982 to 2000, and was president of the Southern Africa Miners' Federation
and vice-president of the Miners' International Federation from 1986 to
1999.  He served as vice-president of the International Chemical, Energy,
Mining and General Workers' Union from 1995 to 2000.

Commenting on the appointment of Mr Edey, Mr Godsell said that when he had
accepted the chairmanship of the company in December 2000, he said that he
and his executive did not believe that the combination of the roles of
chairman and chief executive officer was optimal.  He had pointed out that
both the King Report in South Africa and the Turnbull Principles in the
United Kingdom shared this view.

"I said that we regarded the arrangement as temporary and that the Board
would continue to keep the combined role under review and to identify a non-
executive chairman at an appropriate time," he observed.

Mr Godsell remains an executive director and the CEO of AngloGold.
