STANDARD BANK ANNOUNCES FURTHER BOND ISSUE

  The Standard Bank of South Africa Limited (rated AA Fitch national long-
term senior), has mandated Deutsche Bank and Standard Corporate and Merchant
Bank as lead managers of a further subordinated Tier II bond issue.  This
proposed issue follows the successful SBK1 and SBK2 issues done in 2000. The
timing, maturity and size of the issue will be determined and advised at a
later date.
