RESIGNATION OF NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR                                           
In compliance with section 3.59(b) of the Listings Requirements of the JSE      
Limited, shareholders are hereby notified that Ms S Rapeti has resigned from    
the Board of Directors (the "Board") of Mercantile with immediate effect. Ms    
Rapeti has taken up an executive position with Deloitte, who are the appointed  
external auditors of Mercantile.                                                
The Board has accepted Ms Rapeti`s resignation with regret and wish to thank    
her for her dedicated contribution over the past 5 years.
