UPDATE ON APPOINTMENT OF THE INTERIM BOARD MEMBERS TO SERVE ON THE BOARD OF UMGENI WATER
We refer to the above matter that is of profound governance significance to Umgeni Water.
THE BOARD APPOINTMENTS
In line with the Water Services Act, the previous Minister of Water and Sanitation, the then Honourable Gugile Nkwinti, MP,
concluded the appointment of the Board for Umgeni Water for a term of four (4) years with effect from 01 May 2019 to 30 April
2023.
Following these appointments of the Board, there were changes at national government level that culminated in
Cabinet/Executive changes in May 2019. Minister Nkwinti was replaced by the current Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu MP, as the
Executive Authority responsible for the Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation portfolio. It is worth noting that the Board
appointment process occurred when the work of the 5th Parliament and Cabinet was concluded and therefore the newly
appointed Board was not endorsed by the Cabinet which prompted Minister Sisulu’s decision to terminate the term of office
of the Board in order to regularise the process.
In order to stabilise the governance issues at Umgeni Water, the Minister appointed eleven (11) members of the Interim Board
whilst the Minister is expediting the process to appoint the fully fledged Board. The Interim Board comprises of the following
members:
NO. CANDIDATE GENDER RACE

2. Mr Thabo Johannes Tselane Male African

10. Ms Linda Ngcobo Female African

We are confident that the Interim Board will conduct its business, further reinforcing strict adherence to Corporate Governance
in all its manifestations. In the meantime, as the process for the appointment of a permanent Board is rolled out, Umgeni Water
will continue to perform at optimum in governance and associated matters. The organisation’s conformance to the tenets of
governance is monitored and overseen by various mechanisms, including committees of the Board, an independently-chaired
Ethics Committee, regular Umgeni Water stakeholder engagements that assess compliance to contractual obligations and
quarterly reporting to the Executive Authority and National Treasury.
