Board Appointments                                                              
Standard Bank Group is pleased to announce the appointment of new directors to  
the boards of Standard Bank Group and The Standard Bank of South Africa Limited.
The new directors are as follows:                                               
1.   Mr Trevor Evans, 58, BSc. Chemistry & Geology (Rhodes): He has been with   
the Nampak group since 1967. He is currently Chairman of Nampak Limited and is  
also on the Board of Advisors for Rhodes University.                            
2.   Mr Thulani Gcabashe, 45, BA (Botswana) MA (Urban and Regional              
Planning)(Ball State University). He joined Eskom in 1993 and is currently Chief
Executive of Eskom and Chairman of Eskom Enterprises;                           
3.   Sir Paul Judge (British), 54, MA (Cambridge) MBA (Wharton Business School.)
Previously Group Planning Director of Cadbury Schweppes Plc and Managing        
Director and Chairman of Premier Brands Ltd, Bourneville, he is currently a     
director of various companies in the UK.                                        
4.   Advocate Kgomotso Moroka, 49, B.Proc (Univ. of the North), LlB (Unisa).    
Currently a practising advocate and member of the Johannesburg Society of       
Advocates, she is also a director of companies including MTN and African Rainbow
Minerals.                                                                       
5.   Mr Chris Nissen, 44, B.A. Hons (UCT) M.A. (Humanities) (UCT). Presently    
Chief Executive Officer of Umoya Fishing (Pty) Ltd, he is also Chairman of Sea  
Harvest Corporation Ltd and a director of Tiger Brands.                         
6.   Sir Robert Smith (British), 58, Chartered Accountant: Fellow of the        
Chartered Institute of Bankers (Scotland). Previously Chief Executive of Morgan 
Grenfell Asset Management and a member of the Group Executive Committee of      
Deutsche Bank, he is currently Chairman of the Weir Group plc and was very      
recently chairman of the Financial Reporting Council Group on Audit Committees  
in the UK.                                                                      
All of the appointments are effective immediately.
