African Markets – Factors to watch on Jan 13

NAIROBI, Jan 13 (Reuters) – The following company announcements, scheduled economic indicators, debt and currency market moves and political events may affect African markets on Thursday. – – – – – GLOBAL MARKETS Asian shares were mixed on Thursday, while the dollar slipped as global investors assessed that strong U.S. inflation data was not worrying enough to change the Federal Reserve’s already hawkish rates outlook. WORLD OIL PRICES Oil prices slipped on Thursday, trimming big gains from the previous two sessions, amid uncertainty over near-term demand as cases of the highly contagious Omicron variant of the coronavirus surge around the globe. KENYA MARKETS The Kenyan shilling was unchanged on Wednesday as some dollar inflows from agricultural commodity exporters met with a slowdown in importer demand, traders said. NIGERIA EQUITIES Nigerian stocks climbed towards a four-year high on Wednesday, after Dangote Cement , Nigeria’s biggest listed company, announced plans to buy back shares next week. NIGERIA MEDIA Nigeria will lift a ban on Twitter from midnight after the social media platform agreed to open a local office, among other agreements with authorities in the West African country, a senior government official said on Wednesday. MOZAMBIQUE SECURITY Southern African countries agreed at a summit on Wednesday to extend their troop deployment in Mozambique to help the government fight an Islamic State-linked insurgency, a communique said. ZIMBABWE GOLD Zimbabwe’s gold production rose by 55.5% in 2021, central bank data showed on Wednesday, as government moves to incentivise miners bore fruit.
