WORLD OIL PRICES Oil prices extended gains on Tuesday, hovering near a six-week high, on signs another storm could affect output in Texas this week even as the U.S. industry struggles to return production after Hurricane Ida wreaked havoc on the Gulf Coast. NIGERIA MARKETS The Nigerian naira extended falls against the dollar on the black market on Monday to hit a record low of 550 naira in late trades as buyers tried to secure scarce dollars, traders said. NIGERIA JAIL BREAK Heavily armed gunmen raided a jail in south-central Nigeria late on Sunday, blowing up the perimeter fence and freeing 266 inmates – almost everyone in the prison, authorities said. KENYA MARKETS The Kenyan shilling was stable against the dollar on Monday as supply matched importer demand, traders said. UGANDA MARKETS The Ugandan shilling was stable on Monday on the back of flat importer appetite for hard currency. CONGO HEALTH/CORONAVIRUS Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi has received his first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the government said on Monday, after a six-month wait caused by his unwillingness to take the AstraZeneca shot. BURKINA FASO SECURITY Unidentified armed men killed six gendarmes and wounded seven others in an attack on a convoy of vehicles returning from a gold mine owned by Endeavor Mining in the east of the country, authorities said on Monday. MALI RUSSIA/SAHEL SECURITY A deal is close that would allow Russian mercenaries into Mali, extending Russian influence over security affairs in West Africa and triggering opposition from former colonial power France, seven diplomatic and security sources said. IVORY COAST COCOA Below average rains were recorded last week in most of Ivory Coast’s cocoa growing regions but high soil moisture content from previous rains would help the strong development of the October-to-March main crop, farmers said on Monday.
