Perth Mint’s gold sales surge to 3-year highs in December

(Adds comments) Jan 8 (Reuters) – The Perth Mint’s gold product sales in December rose to their highest in more than three years, the refiner said on Wednesday, citing higher demand from Germany. Sales of gold coins and minted bars in December climbed 45% from the previous month to 78,912 ounces – their highest since October 2016, and surged about 170% from the same month last year, the mint said in a blog post. “Sales of Perth Mint physical bullion are currently very strong in Germany, traditionally one of the Perth Mint’s largest overseas markets,” said Social Media Officer Stephen Ward at Perth Mint. “We believe fears of a technical recession, which Europe’s largest economy has only just averted, have been helping to drive further demand for precious metals in recent weeks.” Meanwhile, silver sales in December were at 1,361,723 ounces, rising 32.5% from November and about 97% from a year ago. Benchmark spot gold prices rose 3.6% in December, registering its biggest monthly gain since August, while silver prices gained 4.8%. The Perth Mint refines more than 90% of newly mined gold in Australia, the world’s second-largest gold producer after China.
