Dr Schoub is a world-renowned virology expert having served as first Professor and Head of the Department of Virology, University of the Witwatersrand, Director of the National Institute for Virology and as the founding Director of the National Institute for Communicable Diseases from which he retired in April 2011. Dr Schoub has also served on several World Health Organisation (WHO) expert committees including: The Strategic Advisory Group of Experts for Influenza; Advisory to the Director-General of WHO on pandemic preparedness; roster of experts for International Health Regulations as well as serving on the Global Hygiene Council for several years.
