Factual Response to allegations in the media regarding FG Landfill Interwaste Holdings Limited (Incorporated in the Republic of South Africa) (Registration number 2006/037223/06) JSE code: IWE ISIN: ZAE000097903 (“the Company”) FACTUAL RESPONSE TO ALLEGATIONS IN THE MEDIA REGARDING FG LANDFILL Shareholders are referred to recent allegations in the media that Interwaste’s FG Landfill site in Midrand, Gauteng, is the primary source of pollution in the area. It is important to note that there is a distinct absence of scientifically verifiable evidence in support of the allegations made. This must be considered against independent, scientific evidence by independent experts which confirms that the site is not the source of the alleged pollution, including: - Results of ongoing monthly ambient air quality monitoring (an internationally accepted method for measuring air quality) which confirm that the landfill does not pose a risk to public health or to the environment; and - Results of regular ground and surface water monitoring. The allegations by the Department of Environmental Affairs that Interwaste is not legally compliant are accordingly denied. Based on the expert opinions in its possession, Interwaste has, and will continue to act to protect its legal rights. Although the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has alleged that the site’s licence has expired, this is disputed by Interwaste (the licence does not contain an expiry date) and the matter is currently subject to judicial review. In conclusion the landfill: - Is ranked in the top 5 percent in South Africa; - Is the only landfill in South Africa with international OHSAS 18001 accreditation (an international health and safety standard based on best practice) awarded by TUV, based in Germany; - Remains the only landfill in Gauteng to be equipped with a state of the art Class B landfill liner system; - Utilises an advanced landfill gas harvesting and flaring systems commissioned by global experts. 27 March 2017 Johannesburg Sponsor Grindrod Bank Date: 27/03/2017 04:33:00 Produced by the JSE SENS Department.
