Press Release: Interwaste Responds To Allegations Interwaste Holdings Limited (Incorporated in the Republic of South Africa) (Registration number: 2006/037223/06) JSE code: IWE ISIN:ZAE000097903 (“Interwaste” or “the Group”) PRESS RELEASE: INTERWASTE RESPONDS TO ALLEGATIONS 26 May 2014: In response to the article in Business Day this morning, Interwaste Holdings Limited (Interwaste) wishes to inform its customers, suppliers, shareholders and the general public that it has confirmed with the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Green Scorpions, that there is no investigation pertaining to the alleged dumping of more than 100 tonnes of hazardous waste per month from Mozambique, or from Japan, in non-designated landfill sites across South Africa. Interwaste has been the focus of recent media reports which stem back to an incident that occurred in the middle part of 2013 at Interwaste’s Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal branch. Interwaste became aware of the wrong-doings at the Richards Bay branch in November 2013 when an environmental audit uncovered that two members of the local management team were involved in dumping waste at a landfill not certified to accept that classification of waste. Interwaste immediately advised the Green Scorpions, in writing, of the transgression, removed the waste from the incorrect landfill site to a landfill site with an appropriate permit, and suspended the two employees responsible for the matter. The clean-up was supervised by, and effected to the satisfaction of, the authorised engineer responsible for the landfill site, and the clean-up process was then audited by a leading independent environmental consulting firm who which also confirmed that the waste had been correctly managed and the process followed was in line with legislation. The matter was disclosed to Interwaste's stakeholders in the company's results announcement in March 2014. The most recent press report alleges that Interwaste is importing hazardous waste into South Africa from a large mining company, Rio Tinto, in Mozambique. This is factually incorrect. Interwaste does not and has never rendered a hazardous waste collection/management service to Rio Tinto in Mozambique, which uses another service provider to manage its hazardous waste; Interwaste provides a fully permitted domestic sewerage collection and disposal service (non- hazardous) to Rio Tinto, Mozambique. Interwaste does import hazardous waste into South Africa from Mozambique and Swaziland, however, all of these imports are executed in compliance with the Basel Convention Authorisations, which are waste type specific and detail the waste management facility in South Africa to which they are authorised (only one landfill site in South Africa has been used for this purpose). The article further alleges that Interwaste imports and illegally disposes of hazardous waste from Japan. This allegation is baseless and devoid of any fact. Interwaste does not and has never imported or managed Japanese waste in any way, shape or form. The latest Business Day article also refers to several investigations under way by the Green Scorpions, one of which has been concluded. The article fails to mention that the matter was concluded without Interwaste being informed of any sanction. Interwaste has rendered professional and environmentally sound services to thousands of customers in Southern Africa for more than 25 years. To date, Interwaste remains the only major waste management company in South Africa not to have been found guilty of transgressing any environmental laws. All our operations are permitted and comply with current legislation; as a whole the company is subjected to in excess of 500 audits per year and we remain committed to rendering services which are not only compliant with current legislation, but are environmentally sound and cost competitive. As directors of a publicly listed company, we take our fiduciary duties to all our stakeholders very seriously.
