Anglo American announces retirement of Mervyn Walker

Anglo American plc ("Anglo American") announces that Mervyn Walker, Group Director – HR
and Corporate Affairs, has decided to retire, with effect 30 June 2014. Mr Walker’s successor
will be announced in due course.

Mark Cutifani, Chief Executive of Anglo American, said: “I would like to thank Mervyn for
everything he has done for Anglo American and, in particular, for ensuring a smooth and
effective transition during 2013 as I took up my role as Chief Executive. Mervyn has provided
me with strong support and sage advice and he will see through the implementation of our new
organisational structure over the next three months. We wish him a happy and fulfilling
retirement.”

Mervyn Walker, Group Director – HR and Corporate Affairs, commented: “I have been
tremendously privileged to be associated with Anglo American for eight years, firstly with Mondi
and then for the last six years in my current role. The completion of our new organisational
structure, providing the platform for future success, will mark the right moment for me to retire.
The quality and values of Anglo American’s people and the way they engage, whether with one
another or with our myriad of stakeholders, is one of our company’s strong differentiating
factors. I have enjoyed working with so many of those people and wish them the very best for
the future.”
