Anglo American plc (“Anglo American”) announces the appointment of Themba Mkhwanazi as
the CEO of its coal business in South Africa, effective during the second quarter of 2014,
following Godfrey Gomwe’s decision to retire from Anglo American.

Themba Mkhwanazi is currently Rio Tinto’s Regional General Manager for the Americas,
responsible for delivering technical and operational improvements across Rio Tinto’s

Seamus French, CEO of Anglo American’s Coal business, said: “I am delighted to appoint
Themba Mkhwanazi to lead our coal business in South Africa. Themba brings extensive

including 16 years in South Africa and more recently in the USA. Themba’s leadership and
technical expertise will be instrumental in helping us deliver the full potential from our
consolidated global coal business.”

Mark Cutifani, CEO of Anglo American, said: “Godfrey Gomwe has made an invaluable
contribution to Anglo American throughout his 15 years with the Group in a number of senior
executive positions. Godfrey’s commercial experience and collaborative approach to
engagement has strengthened our business in South Africa and we thank him for his support in
integrating our global coal interests in recent months. We wish him well in his retirement.”
