TRADING STATEMENT

In terms of the JSE Limited Listings Requirements, companies are required to publish a trading statement
as soon as they are satisfied with a reasonable degree of certainty that the financial results of the period to
be reported upon next will differ by 20% or more from the financial results of the previous corresponding
period.

Shareholders are advised that the Company’s attributable loss per share for the interim period ended
31 August 2013 is expected to be between 17.66 cents and 17.22 cents. The headline loss per share for
the same period is expected to be between 9.93 cents and 9.59 cents.

These results include Goodwill impairment of R47.1 million following the disposal of the West African Group
division and mark-to-market losses from listed investments (Alphamin Resources Corp. and Afarak Group
Plc) of R3.3 million.

Without these adjustments the expected attributable earnings per share for the interim period ended
31 August 2013 would have been between 0.10 cents and 0.54 cents.

The Company’s auditors have not reported on the financial information on which this trading statement is
based. Shareholders are advised that the results for the period ended 31 August 2013 will be released no
later than 31 October 2013.
