This follows a joint call from management, the office of the Chief Inspector of Mines, the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), unions and the South African Police Services (SAPS) for employees who had waged a sit-in at the Monarch Decline Shaft to return to surface. Management has engaged the services of an independent mediator to resolve the dispute between the parties. The strike, which started on 10 July 2013 has resulted in revenue losses of some R10.5 million. Employees have lost a total of R2 million in wages. Village acknowledges the support of the SAPS, government, through the DMR, and from the unions, during this time.
