He was a generous and caring person who did a great deal for South Africa. He will be dearly missed, but we remain committed to continue the legacy he leaves behind,” commented Mustaq Brey, Chief Executive Officer of Brimstone. Professor Jakes Gerwel, an academic, executive and struggle stalwart, served as a Director General in the office of former President Nelson Mandela. He was a well-known figure in South Africa's academic and political history and in his later years, he chaired and was on the boards of a number of major organisations and corporations. He served on the Brimstone board for 13 years and made significant contributions during his tenure. Professor Gerwel’s legacy for the community was in his leadership and passion for its people. He spearheaded the Company’s unwavering philosophy to be profitable and to continue empowering disadvantaged communities. Fred Robertson, deputy executive Chairman, stated: “We have lost an irreplaceable colleague and mentor. He was a man of deep integrity and one of the greatest minds in South African society. Most of all, he was a friend to every one of us at Brimstone. His death leaves a large void and we will sadly miss his personification of a dedicated unselfish colleague, mentor and friend.
