Update on Palabora mine incident

Palabora Mining Company Limited (Palabora) sadly announces that one of
the workers trapped underground has died.

Palabora managing director Tony Lennox said “We are deeply saddened by
the tragic death of our colleague. Our deepest sympathy goes to the family of
the deceased.

“We have launched a full investigation into the incident and production has
been stopped until further notice.”

Two workers became trapped at approximately 02:30am on Sunday 14th
October whilst carrying out repairs at a crusher. One of the workers was
rescued on Sunday afternoon at approximately 16.30 and is recovering well at
the hospital.

Palabora is South Africa’s major producer of refined copper and operates an
underground block cave mine, a smelter and refinery complex based in
Phalaborwa in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.
