SLM - Sanlam Limited - Changes in directorship and committee membership Sanlam Limited (Incorporated in the Republic of South Africa) (Registration number 1959/001562/06) JSE share code: SLM NSX share code: SLA ISIN number: ZAE000070660 ("Sanlam" or "the company" or "the Group") Changes in directorship and committee membership Notification is hereby given in accordance with the JSE Limited Listings Requirements of the following changes in the directorship and committee membership of Sanlam: Roy Andersen, the chairman of the Sanlam Limited and Sanlam Life Boards, indicated in December 2009 that he wanted to step down as chairman and as a director of those companies at the conclusion of the Sanlam Board meeting of 9 June 2010, after completing two three-year terms as a director. He has served as independent non-executive chairman since June 2004. Desmond Smith became the new chairman of the Sanlam Limited and Sanlam Life Boards on 9 June 2010 after he was unanimously appointed as chairman-elect by the Sanlam Board in December 2009 to succeed Mr Andersen. He is an independent non-executive director of Sanlam and the former chairman of Santam Limited. Patrice Motsepe, deputy chairman of the Sanlam Board and also the leader of Sanlam`s anchor black economic empowerment shareholder, commented: "On behalf of the Sanlam Board, I would like to express our deep appreciation and gratitude to Roy for the exemplary and outstanding manner in which he has served the company and all its stakeholders as Chairman of the Sanlam Board over the period during which the Group posted significant results and achievements. After matriculating from Indwe High School, he obtained his B.Sc degree (cum laude) at the University of Stellenbosch. In 1973 he qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (London) and completed the International Senior Management Programme (ISMP) at Harvard Business School in 1992. He joined Sanlam in 1968, where he became Managing Director in 1993. He retired from Sanlam at the end of 1997 and served as Managing Director of the Reinsurance Group of America (South Africa) (RGA) from 1999 until 2005. He is currently Chairman of RGA and Sanlam and holds several company directorships. He serves on a number of the committees of the Actuarial Society of SA and the International Actuarial Association and is currently the only nominee to become President of the Association in January 2012. He serves on the Financial Services Board`s Advisory Committee on Long-Term Insurance and the Council of the Ombudsman for Long-term Insurance. He served as Chairman of the Life Offices Association of South Africa (LOA) in 1996, 2004 and 2008 and is a Past President of the Pensions Institute of Southern Africa and of the Actuarial Society of South Africa. He is married and has a daughter and a son.
