Mr Wallington, who is based in Johannesburg, brings a wealth of coal experience to this new executive position. For the last 11 years of his 27 years with Anglo Coal, he has held very senior executive positions such as Senior Vice President (1997 - 2001) and CEO (2001 - 2008). A mining engineer by profession, Mr Wallington has extensive practical, technical and corporate experience that is necessary to oversee the implementation and final development of the BFS for FSE`s coal assets in the famous Waterberg Coal Region located at the north end of South Africa John Nicholas Wallington Career Profile - An experienced high calibre Mining Executive with a proven track record in delivering results and transforming a global organisation. - Possesses solid business knowledge and experience and has extensive skills in managing open cast and underground operations over multiple sites and countries. - A demonstrated strength in people management with an ability to determine a vision and impart this to all levels of the organisation, thereby creating an environment where people can perform at high levels. - A recognised champion for safety with results to support this commitment. - Possesses high drive and energy and acts consistently with own stated values and beliefs. Education 1980: BSc Mining Engineering (University of the Witwatersrand) 2002: London Business School (Senior Executive Programme) 2005: Harvard Business School (Executive Programme in Strategy and Organisation) Professional Experience & Achievements Independent May2008-Present Since leaving Anglo American main activities have been; - Joined Boards of Keaton and Firestone Energy as Independent Non Executive director. - Involved in a number of Consultative Technical and Due Diligence type projects with several Companies based mainly in SA and including Indonesia and Australia. Anglo American Pty Ltd - Anglo Coal Division 1981 -2008 Anglo American is one of the world`s largest mining and natural resource groups. With its subsidiaries, joint ventures and associates, it is a global leader in platinum and diamonds and has significant interests in coal, base and ferrous metals. The Group is geographically diverse with operations in Africa, Europe, South and North America, Australia and Asia. Anglo Coal is one of the largest and most profitable private coal companies in the world with ownership (wholly owned and in Joint Ventures) in 20 mines in South Africa, Australia, South America and Canada and interests in China. It has produced over 90 mtpa during the past 3 years and is expected to increase to over 100mt in 2008. CEO Anglo Coal Jan 2005 - May 2008 Responsible for the management of the Coal Division which has a turnover of +$3,5bn, and estimated operating profit of over $1,5bn for 2008. The Division employs over 20,000 people including contractors. Achievements: - Developed and implemented the Coal Division Strategy, which integrated the vision and direction of the business unit with profit, safety, operational performance and strategic growth targets. - Established a Global Management Structure and capability to meet the strategic goals of Global Expansion. - Successfully acquired a Canadian operation in early 2007 and progressed its expansion. - Developed the Anglo Coal profile in China and India. - Played a major role in the completion of Black Empowerment transaction in 2007 that enabled Anglo Coal (SA) to meet its Transformation targets. - Recruited high performing Regional CEO`s in South Africa and Australia and key members of the Global Executive team. - Built a highly effective Executive team with shared values and aspirations. - Progressed a number of new projects through approval into construction and production in SA and Australia. - Completed M&A acquisition in Australia end 2007. - Total production during the period increased from 90 mtpa in 2005 to an expected 105 mtpa in 2008. - Built and maintained relationships with customers and government officials across a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. - Implemented a global Asset Optimization and Operational Improvement model aimed at benchmarking and sharing best practice globally. - Led the development of a single global Safety Strategy and Plan with performance improving by some 25% over the 3 years period, based on lost time and recordable injury rates. Previous Positions in Anglo Coal: Regional CEO (South Africa) June 2001 - Dec 2004 Anglo Coal SA comprises 9 major collieries, producing 34mt to Eskom (National Electricity supplier) and exporting 18mt annually of primarily thermal coal. Production is sourced approximately 50% from opencast and underground methods, employing 8 000 people. A mine producing 5 mtpa was approved for supply to Sasol coming on stream in 2006. Achievements: - Initiated successful transformation programme which aimed at changing the culture and modus operandi of how the company was managed. This has resulted in a people focussed, performance based business that has adapted well to the changing needs and circumstances of the political and social environment of the country it operates in (SA). - Production and profits consistently exceeded budget. - Improved safety performance (LTIFR improved by 40%; TRCFR by 16%). - Increased production from 47 mtpa to 55 mtpa during this period. Senior Vice President 1997 - 2001 Responsible for the management of the opencast and then underground operations. Led safety and operational initiatives to substantially increase the profitability of these operations. General Manager (Kleinkopje Colliery) 1994 - 1997 Responsible for the management of the Kleinkopje opencast mine producing 5 mtpa of export product. During 1997, was also responsible for managing the adjacent Landau Colliery and achieved a turnaround in performance. Changed hostile management-union relationships to a more effective and trusting association. Early Career Positions: Assistant Manager (Kleinkopje Colliery) 1990 - 1994 Underground Manager (Arnot Colliery) 1989 - 1990 Opencast Manager (Arnot Colliery) 1986 - 1988 Assistant Pit Superintendent (Kriel Colliery) 1984 - 1986 Mining Graduate (Arnot Colliery) 1981 - 1984 The above positions were operational with responsibility for the day to day running of the specific colliery as part thereof. Main contributions made were in the areas of; development of people; initiating and improving operations through improved planning, use of different technology and leadership.
