FirstRand announces with regret the death of Mr Yunus Ismail Mahomed on Sunday 6
January 2008.                                                                   
Mr Mahomed was a founding member of Kagiso Trust and at the time of his untimely
death was its chairman.  The Trust is a participant of FirstRand`s Empowerment  
transaction and Mr Mahomed was a non-executive director of FirstRand and        
represented Kagiso Trust in that capacity.
