The Sanlam Limited Board announces its intention (in terms of Article 14.2 of   
its Articles of Association) to propose and recommend the election of Ian       
Plenderleith* (62) as an independent non-executive director of Sanlam Limited,  
at its AGM to be held on 7 June 2006, to replace Dave Brink who had earlier     
indicated his intention to retire and not to make himself available for re-     
election to the Sanlam Board.                                                   
For this purpose, an additional proxy form will be available on Sanlam"s website
from Monday, 15 May 2006 for shareholders who will not attend the AGM           
personally. This proxy form can also be requested from Computershare, Sanlam"s  
transfer secretaries, at 0861 100 913 (or +27 (11) 370 5320 for calls from      
outside the RSA                                                                 
Mr. Plenderleith recently retired as Deputy Governor of the South African       
Reserve Bank, which he joined in 2003 for a three-year term.  He served on the  
Bank"s Monetary Policy Committee and was responsible for money, capital and     
foreign exchange market operations and for international banking relationships. 
He was previously at the Bank of England in London for over 30 years, where he  
was most recently Executive Director, responsible for the Bank"s financial      
market operations, and a member of the Bank"s Monetary Policy Committee.  Mr.   
Plenderleith also previously held office at the International Monetary Fund in  
Washington DC, and also served on the Board of the European Investment Bank, and
on various international committees at the Bank for International Settlements in
Basel and at the Organisation for European Co-operation and Development.
