Commenting on the appointment, Lonmin"s Chairman, Sir John Craven said: "I am very pleased to welcome Dr. Gounden to Lonmin. His expertise, knowledge and wide ranging business experience in South Africa will make Dr. Gounden a valuable addition to the Lonmin Board." Dr. Gounden is a trustee of the Deutsche Bank Africa Foundation and a director of Grindrod Limited, a company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and Bateman Engineering BV. In April 2001, he was awarded a Doctorate in Philosophy from the School of Engineering at the University of Natal. His professional career has seen him focus on a range of developmental projects, both in the public and private sectors. Prior to joining the South African Government in 1994, he spent a decade in the private sector, where he project-led several large-scale urban infrastructure projects. In 1994, he joined the Department of Public Works, where he initiated the concept of public- private partnerships, and a review of the Built Environment professions. The latter resulted in a fundamental change to the legal framework that governs the various Built Environment professions. He was also instrumental in championing public sector procurement reform, and was responsible for co-authoring Government"s green paper on Public Sector Procurement in 1996. In 1999, he was appointed Director-General of the newly established Department of Public Enterprises, and was responsible for the restructuring of State Owned Enterprises in key sectors of the economy, such as transport, telecommunications, energy and defence. In June 2003 he left the public sector to join Bateman BV, a global process engineering company as its Chief Executive Officer responsible for its operations worldwide.
