Llewellyn has worked for Anglo American and De Beers for over two decades. During this time he was exposed to various mining operations spanning Canada, England, Namibia and Southern Africa. After completing his chemical engineering degree at the University of Cape Town in 1983, he joined De Beers in Namibia and occupied numerous positions in diamond processing. In 1994 he joined Anglo American as a mine manager at Namakwa Sands, a mineral sands operation situated on the west coast of South Africa where he most recently occupied the general manager position. He will join Trans Hex Group in July 2004. Commenting on the appointment, Bernard van Rooyen, Deputy Chairman said: "We look forward to drawing on Llewellyn"s leadership skills and consummate knowledge of the mining industry.
