Help & FAQ

HOW DO I PICK MY SHARES?

To pick your shares simply click on the Submit Picks tab at the top of this page. You will then be able to select the five shares you wish to activate for the month. However, if you feel that a share is going to perform particularly well you can choose to 'double up' on it, in this case you may end up with only three different shares if you choose to double up on two shares.

You should choose your shares based on your trading or investment strategy. Research and technical analysis techniques may prove helpful when making your decision.

WHEN SHOULD I PICK AND SUBMIT MY SHARES?

You can pick your shares for the month at any time during the month. The price of the share you pick will be entered into your stock picks at the time and date of picking or, if outside of market hours, when the markets reopen. For this reason it's important to make your choice carefully based on what the markets are doing.

It is also possible to pick shares a month in advance but these will only be activated at the first market opportunity in the new month.

Important!: Once a stock has been selected it cannot be changed for the rest of the month. The closing price of your picks at the end of the month will determine how well your picks have performed.

Share positions are not rolled over into the next month. You will need to pick your shares again every month.

DOES THE TIME THAT I PICK MY SHARES MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Yes. If you pick your shares after hours when the markets are closed your opening price will be determined by the closing price of the most recent trading day. But if someone else picks the same shares after hours, or before the start of the month, the player who picked their shares first will rank higher than the other player/s even though they generated the same return.

WHAT SHARES CAN I PICK?

StockPicks allows you to pick up to five different JSE shares from this list of liquid shares (Shares that trade frequently). As explained above, if you feel that a particular share is going to perform well you can choose to 'double up' on a share, in this case you may end up with only three different shares if you choose to double up on two shares.

See Liquid Shares here.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T SUBMIT MY PICKS FOR A PARTICULAR MONTH?

StockPicks is an ongoing interactive challenge that requires you to submit your picks every month. If you don't submit your picks for a particular month you won't be in the running for that month's prizes, you may also jeopardise your chances of winning the GRAND PRIZE. For your best chance of winning we suggest you play every month.

WHO CAN PLAY STOCKPICKS?

Only South African residents with a valid South African ID number and over the age of 18 will be able to register for and play StockPicks.

HOW DOES THE POINTS SYSTEM WORK?

All players who finish the month with a positive return qualify for points. The points allocated are based on the number of players who finished the month with a positive return. For example: If there are 100 entrants and 15 end the month with a positive return then the player with the highest return will earn 15 points. The second placed challenger will receive 1 point less (14) and so on until the last positive placed participant receives only 1 point for the month.

The top ten placed players also all receive an additional 10 BONUS POINTS each.

Two points tables will run concurrently (at the same time):

1 - A monthly points table: This points table is reset to zero at the start of each month, which means players all have an equal chance of picking the best performing stocks. Each month the players with the best performing picks will receive cash prizes and Sharenet products.

2 - An 8-month points table: This table is cumulative and players' monthly points will be added up over the full duration of the challenge. The player that achieves the highest total number of points at the end of November 2016 will be the Grand Prize winner.

WHEN ARE WINNERS ANNOUNCED?

Winners of the monthly cash prizes and Sharenet prizes are announced via email at the start of each month once the points from the previous month have been tallied. Winners will also be contacted as per the method explained in our terms and conditions. Winners will be required to prove that they are eligible by providing an acceptable form of proof of identity.

The winner of the GRAND PRIZE will be announced at the end of the challenge in early December 2016.

WHY IS MY ID NUMBER REQUIRED?

ID numbers are required to help prevent fraud and multiple entries, and to ensure that only private individuals participate in the StockPicks Challenge. If Sharenet suspects any player of breaking the rules of this challenge we reserve the right to disqualify them outright.

WHAT ARE THE STOCKPICKS' TERMS & CONDITIONS?

To play StockPicks you must agreed to our terms and conditions when you register. To read these please click here.

CAN I CHANGE OR 'SELL' MY PICKS ONCE THEY'RE SELECTED?

Once you've made a selection your picks are locked in for the remainder of the month, so make sure you're happy with your choice. That said, your picks selection will clear at the beginning of every month, at which point you'll be able to reselect a new set of shares. Strategically, for example, you may decide to only make your selection three days before the end of the month if you think a rally is imminent. In trading terms you can only go long on shares when playing StockPicks.
