Activist Investors: Locusts or creators of value?
Charles Wilson
November 2009
When the CEO’s of the big three U.S. auto makers arrived in Washington in February, hats in hand and looking for a government bailout, they arrived in three separate corporate jets. Confidence: Is too much of it hazardous to your wealth?
AJ Cilliers
July 2009
Psychologists have found that over-confidence is greatest for difficult tasks, for forecasts where it is less likely to make an accurate prediction. Because selecting shares that outperform the market is a difficult task, with low predictability and conflicting feedback, share selection is exactly the type of task which could be subject to high levels of over-confidence.

January 2009
Now that the festive season has given us a brief respite against the turbulence of 2008, it’s time to tune back into reality. Markets have opened fairly positively thus far into the New Year, but analysts see more bumps in the road ahead and warn us not to let our guard down too soon.

For me, January is a good time to evaluate my progress in terms of achieving my life’s purpose, and set new goals where I’ve gone off course or where I’ve adjusted my understanding of what I’m here to do. Financial goals are the trickiest to set – how much is enough before a means becomes an end?

For various reasons (not the least being a trip overseas for a friend’s wedding) I have drastically cut my spending budget for each month. I confess that laziness prevented me from researching cost-efficient contracts, and it has cost me a small fortune over recent years. It was so easy to justify not researching properly: “I’d rather be doing something else” or “I’m just not interested in that kind of thing.” Now that money’s tighter, my (financial) laziness has been shaved off like a bad haircut. Thanks to a solid advisor and a pinch of adversity, I’ve found that saving money gives almost as great a high as making it or spending it!

Here’s to being a better steward of financial resources in 2009,
