| Business | Life is a leading private hospital operator in South Africa. Life primarily serves the market for privately insured individuals, representing approximately eight million people. In the 2008 calendar year, the privately insured market represented healthcare expenditures of approximately R64.7 billion (excluding patients' out-of-pocket expenditures and administrative expenditures). The South African private healthcare market is attractive due to a number of factors including high barriers to entry in the private hospital sector; a growing middle class resulting in a growing privately insured population; a high and increasing disease burden in the country; an ageing privately insured population; and an under-resourced public sector healthcare system.Life has more than 25 years experience operating private hospitals in South Africa.
