ZANDILE JAKAVULA JOINS AECI BOARD
In 1969 Zandile Jakavula joined Dulux Paints, an AECI subsidiary, as a
very junior payroll employee. Today he is the Chief Executive Officer of
Spoornet, a subsidiary of Transnet, and has accepted an appointment as a non-
executive director of AECI Limited.
Born and raised in Port Elizabeth, Mr Jakavula is a graduate of both Fort
Hare University and Witwatersrand University Business School, where he
obtained diplomas in Human Resources and Industrial Relations Management.
From 1976 to 1994 Mr Jakavula worked for AECI in the human resource
management field. During this time, he became involved in Industrial
Relations and, through his efforts and ability, was ultimately promoted to
the position of Modderfontein factory IR manager. At the time he was
described by a manager as "Ambitious, determined and an excellent
In 1994 he joined Metrorail, a division of Transnet in charge of commuter
rail in metropolitan areas. Appointed as the Industrial Relations Manager
he went on to become the Senior Manager Human Resources and in October 1996
he was promoted to Chief Executive Officer. He is credited with turning
Metrorail around to profitability and transforming it to a truly
representative South African company.
Mr Jakavula was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Spoornet in March
2000 with the brief to make Spoornet profitable and transform it. A
remarkable turnaround has been achieved to date.
Commenting on the appointment, AECI Chief Executive Lex van Vught said
that Mr Jakavula had a reputation within AECI as a respected, caring and
invaluable employee. "If we add his undoubted business acumen to these
abilities then AECI is truly fortunate to have Zandile as a director. We
welcome him to the Board and look forward to his contribution and counsel as
we transform AECI into a world class group."
Mr Jakavula is an active member of the Methodist Church, and served as
Lay President of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa from 1996 to 1998.
He also serves on several community and professional bodies.
