Mining companies send S.African stocks to record high
By Tiisetso Motsoeneng
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African stocks notched up a record closing high on Friday with mining shares adding the most points to the key index after forecast-beating Chinese trade data soothed fears about the health of the global economy.
The blue-chip JSE Top-40 index also booked a modest three-quarters of a percent gain for the week as investors tread carefully following a string of historic peaks that has propped up the index by nearly 5 percent so far this year.
The index ended 0.57 percent higher at a record close of 36,477.46 points after setting a record 36,568.09 earlier in the session. The broader All-share index added 0.5 percent to its highest close ever of 40,892.65. It scaled a record 40,983.01 during the session.
"The Chinese data shows that the global economy is on firmer footing and that has helped mining shares all around the world," Desmond Reilly, a trader PSG Securities said.
China's exports and imports rose more than expected in January, pointing both to stronger domestic demand and to a recovery in the world economy as a whole.
Mining stocks look to China, the world's biggest consumer of the commodities, for demand of metals such as copper.
Anglo American Platinum, the world's biggest producer of the white metal, was the biggest gainer on the benchmark JSE Top-40 index, rising 2.5 percent to 482 rand.
Mining giant Anglo American picked up 2.15 percent to 279 rand and world no. 4 bullion producer Gold Fields was 1.11 percent higher at 105.80 rand.
On the downside, paper and pulp maker Sappi fell 0.7 percent to 27.80 rand, dropping for the third straight day after weak quarterly earnings results this week.
African Bank plunged to a record low of 28.65 rand after the unsecured credit lender said the country's credit watchdog had proposed a 300 million rand fine following an industry-wide probe into possible reckless lending. The stock eventually closed 0.3 percent lower at 30.50 rand.
Provisional bourse statistics showed a slightly below average 155 million shares traded, with 191 stocks advancing, 109 losing ground and 62 remaining unchanged.
