S.Africa's rand gains vs dollar, hits 7.50 resistance
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's rand gained for the second day against the dollar on Thursday as confidence returned to investors to take on risky assets with Greece closer to sidestepping a messy default.
The rand firmed to the 7.50 resistance level, which it bounced from in early February and could prove sticky for rand bulls.
Progress in the euro zone boosted risky assets as Greece gets closer to securing a deal with its private creditors that will allow it to redeem debt due this month.
If emerging markets continue to be in favour, the local unit may break through 7.50 to 7.45 and then the 2012 high of 7.4020.
The Reuters Econometer, an index that gauges the outlook for South Africa's economy, was higher in February compared to January. The survey consensus is for the rand to end the year at 7.59, compared to previous estimates of 7.78.
By 1600 GMT the rand was up 1.07 percent on the dollar at 7.5155, compared to a 7.5960 close in New York on Wednesday.
Data from the statistics agency earlier showed manufacturing growth in January at 2.4 percent on a year-on-year basis, unchanged from December, compared to market expectations of 2.5 percent growth.
"The rand is following wider emerging markets. Even though manufacturing production was a touch softer than forecast, there was no great surprise and at least its still growing," said Christopher Shiells, emerging market analyst at Informa Global Markets said.
Analysts expect the manufacturing sector to trudge along for the rest of the year as softer export demand puts strain on manufacturers.
Bond yields continued lower from the previous session as the government bond curve that was seen as oversold last week recovers.
The yield on benchmark debt maturing in three years dropped 4.5 basis points to 6.66 percent while that due in 14 years gave up 3.5 basis points to 8.275 percent.
The Treasury is selling 800 million randin inflation linked paper at 0900 GMT on Friday, which is expected to receive reasonable demand and see yields clear at or better than market levels.
